A PIECE OF HISTORY RETURNS TO BATU

Mr Brendan O’Sullivan gratefully accepts the oration from Mr Noel and Joe Cavanagh

An original copy of the oration delivered in November 1935 by James Litholder General President of the Bricklayers Union(Ancient Guild of Incorporated Brick and Stonelayers Trade Union), at the unveiling of the memorial headstone for Richard O’Carroll, General Secretary of the Bricklayers Union, who was killed during the 1916 Rising was presented to BATU on the 27th June 2018.

The presentation was made by BATU members Noel and Joe Cavanagh. The oration was originally presented to their granduncle Joseph Cavanagh by James Litholder in 1935. At the time Joseph Cavanagh was a member of the Limerick committee of the Bricklayers Union and was one of several hundred union members and Republicans who attended the unveiling ceremony.

The oration was previously presented to the National Archives and stored in their Building in Bishop Street, Dublin. Following a request by the Cavanagh family it was returned to them and is now entrusted to BATU.
